Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (AVES)
Hearing that your pet has cancer can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. Our compassionate team is here to guide you through every step, with your pet’s comfort and quality of life at the heart of their care.
Once a definitive diagnosis has been made, we typically move to a process called staging. While diagnosis tells us what type of cancer is present, staging helps us understand where it is in the body. This information allows us to tailor the most appropriate treatment plan for your pet.
Staging may include a combination of advanced tests such as: bloodwork, urine testing, radiographs (x-rays), ultrasounds, CT or MRI imaging, endoscopy, needle aspirates, or biopsies.
Following diagnosis and staging, your AVES oncologist will thoughtfully guide you through a personalized spectrum of treatment options aligned with your family’s wishes for your pet’s cancer care. Most treatment plans include either a single modality or a coordinated combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Whether working with a medical or radiation oncologist, you’ll receive a guided review of each therapeutic option, supported by collaboration with other specialists to create an elevated, comprehensive plan for your pet.
