What to Expect When Your Pet Is Referred to Our Surgery Department
August 26, 2025 · For Pet Parents

If your primary veterinarian has referred your pet to Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (AVES) for an evaluation with our Surgery Department, it’s natural to feel a little anxious—especially if your pet is in pain or facing a serious medical issue. Our team is here to guide you through each step, ensuring you feel informed, supported, and confident in your pet’s care. Your veterinarian has trusted us to take the next step in your pet’s treatment because of our advanced surgical capabilities, led by board-certified surgeons and supported by an on-site anesthesiologist dedicated to your pet’s safety and comfort.
Here’s what you can expect when you and your pet visit our Surgery Department:
Step 1: Initial Consultation & Pre-Surgical Evaluation
Your first visit will include a detailed consultation with one of our board-certified veterinary surgeons. During this time, we will:
Review your pet’s history and discuss why your primary vet recommended a consultation with AVES.
Perform a physical exam and may recommend additional imaging (like X-rays, MRI or ultrasounds) or bloodwork if needed.
Discuss the surgical plan in detail—what the procedure involves, the expected outcome, potential risks, and recovery time.
We encourage you to ask questions—our team is here to help you make the best, most informed decision for your pet.
Step 2: Surgery Day
On the day of surgery, your pet will be in the caring hands of our experienced surgical and anesthesia teams. Here’s what you can expect:
Safe anesthesia: Your pet will be carefully monitored before, during, and after surgery to ensure their safety. Our full-time, on-site anesthesiologist, Dr. Whittaker will tailor a sedation and anesthesia plan specifically to your pets history, personality, and concerns.
Advanced surgical techniques: Whether your pet needs orthopedic surgery (like TPLO for a torn ACL or a total hip replacement) or a different procedure, our surgeons use the latest tools and techniques to provide the best outcomes.
Communication: We’ll keep you updated throughout the day, including before, during, and after your pet is in surgery. This may include text messages, pictures, emails, and/or phone calls, pending your references.
Step 3: Post-Operative Care at Home
After surgery, most pets stay in our hospital for monitoring overnight. When it’s time to go home, we’ll provide:
Detailed discharge instructions: Including how to give medications, care for incisions, and monitor for any concerns.
Activity guidelines: Some pets need strict rest (especially after orthopedic surgeries), while others may need to wear an E-collar or avoid stairs and jumping.
Support: If you have questions after you get home, we’re just a phone call and/or email away.
Recovery times vary depending on the type of surgery, but our team will help guide you through what to expect at each stage.
Step 4: Follow-Up Visits & Long-Term Success
Healing doesn’t stop after surgery—that’s why follow-up visits are so important. These appointments help us:
Monitor your pet’s progress
Ensure proper healing (sometimes with follow-up imaging like X-rays)
Adjust medications or activity restrictions if needed
Provide recommendations for rehabilitation services
Our ultimate goal is to help your pet return to a happy, healthy life with as little discomfort as possible.
We understand that your pet is a beloved family member, and we’re honored to be part of their care team. At AVES, you can expect:
Compassionate, expert care from specialists who treat your pet like their own
Clear communication every step of the way
A team approach, working closely with your primary veterinarian
If you’ve received a referral to our Surgery Department, rest assured—we’re here to support you and your pet through the journey, from consultation to recovery.
